Bangor music students plan Harvestfest
The Bangor Middle/High School music departments along with the Bangor Music Backers will host their annual Harvestfest on Friday, Nov. 14, in the high school gymnasium.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the band and choir concert beginning at 7 p.m., followed by festivities including a cake/pie walk, kid’s games, door prizes, bake sale and cash raffle giveaway. Concessions, including hot dogs and barbeque will be available before and after the concert.
Admission is $1, and advance raffle tickets can be purchased from any music student.
WSHS schedules winter sports meeting for Nov. 3
The West Salem High School winter pre-season sports’ meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 3, in the Heider Center auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. This meeting is for those athletes interested in participating in boys’ or girls’ basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, hockey, skiing, winter cheerleading and winter poms, and their parents/guardians.
The 7 to 8 p.m. general session is only for those parents and athletes who did not fulfill this obligation at the fall pre-season meeting. At 8 p.m., all athletes and parents are expected to attend the break-out session with the coaches of their respective sports.
From 6:30 to 9 p.m., there will be stations set up in the lobby to check the necessary paperwork requirements of each athlete. All paperwork must be completed before beginning practice.

The Neshonoc Lakers girls basketball club will begin its fall season with a practice for all interested seventh- and eighth-graders at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the high school.
The Lakers provide additional basketball opportunities for girls in grades 7-12, with an emphasis on skill development, sportsmanship and team play.
The fall program is associated with the Great Norwest Basketball League and the Amateur Athletic Union. Cost is $50, which includes AAU fee, insurance, coaching and jersey.

On Sunday, Oct. 26, an open house will celebrate the opening of the new Avery R. Gundersen Center for Women in Onalaska.
The event will run from 3 to 5 p.m., with a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting on the fourth floor of the Gundersen Lutheran Onalaska clinic.
The Center for Women was named in Avery R. Gundersen’s honor, a strong advocate for women in the community.
There will be tours of the new center and classical music, in addition to light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments after the dedication ceremony.
The La Crosse branch of the American Association of University Women meets Saturday, Nov. 8, at the La Crosse Country Club, 300 Marcou Road, Onalaska.
The program will be on the Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health, presented by alliance director Sara Finger.
Registration is at 9:30, brunch at 10 and program at 10:30. Brunch will be chicken hash (roasted potatoes, peppers, chicken), fruit cup, juice or coffee.

La Crosse Community Theatre will hold auditions for its production of “Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus” on Oct. 27-28 by appointment beginning at 7 p.m., at the theater, 118 Fifth Ave. N., La Crosse
Virginia is an 8-year-old girl wondering if Santa Claus is real. She writes a letter to the editor of the New York Sun in 1897. Based on real events, the play is narrated by the editor of the Sun and aims to make the audience believe that Santa Claus “exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist.”
The cast will be made up of 10 men (ages 17-50), four women (ages 20-70), two boys (ages 8-12), and four girls (ages 8-12).
Auditioners should be prepared to read from the script and perform movements on stage.

Onalaska High School is one of the stops on a regional tour by the Carthage College Wind Orchestra. Based in Kenosha, Wis., the orchestra is marking its 135th anniversary this year and will perform on Tuesday, Oct. 28, starting at 7 p.m. in OHS’s Claude C. Deck Performing Arts Center.
The concert is free and features soloist Kenton Rauwerdink, a senior music and biochemistry major who will perform the Concerto for Bassoon by Hungarian composer Fryges Hidas.
Other music to be performed by the 45-member orchestra includes Andrew Boysen Jr.’s “Ovations,” Percy Grainger’s “Now O Now I Needs Must Part,” Howard Hanson’s “Triumphal Ode,” up-and-coming composer Jonathan Newman’s “Moon by Night” and “Avenue X” and several songs by beloved American composer Charles Ives combined in a nostalgic setting called “Old Home Days.”
The Carthage Wind Orchestra is under the direction of James Ripley, director of instrumental music activities and chairman of the music department at Carthage College.
The Sierra Club will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in the basement of the Ho-Chunk Three Rivers House, Eighth and Main streets, La Crosse.
Kay Rutherford, a La Crosse resident who once lived on Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, will speak on, “Why NOT to Drill on ANWR!” She will show slides, share artifacts and bring her retired sled dog, Sasha. All are welcome.

West Salem Elementary will host two events on Saturday, Oct. 25 — a craft fair and a pancake breakfast.
The West Salem Lions Club will serve up pancakes, sausage, applesauce, juice, coffee and milk from 7:30 to 10 a.m., with tickets going for $5 or $2 for preschool-aged children.

The Gundersen Lutheran Department of Dental Specialists in conjunction with the La Crosse Area Family YMCA is offering sports participants the chance to have custom-made mouthguards for a minimal charge.
Dental Specialists staff members will take mouthguard impressions from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in the Dental department of Gundersen Lutheran’s main campus. Participants can choose from a variety of colors for their mouthguards, even in their favorite team colors.

“Waterfowlers Know Your Ducks” is the title of a new brochure printed by the La Crosse County Conservation Alliance in partnership with other local conservation organizations and La Crosse Graphics.
The brochure shows the distinguishing characteristics of canvasback and scaup. The reason is because there is no canvasback hunting season this year and the scaup bag limit has been reduced.
The Alliance also converted a VHS video “King of Ducks,” a 16-minute duck identification video, to DVD format.

Fort McCoy is making available a seven-day permit for the 2008 Gun-Deer Season. The permit will be valid from Monday, Nov. 24 n Sunday, Nov. 30.
This new permit option will allow additional hunting opportunities, as well as help manage the installation deer population. This permit is not valid during the opening weekend of the nine-day season, Saturday, Nov. 22 n Sunday, Nov. 23. Permits valid for the entire nine-day season, which runs from Nov. 22-30, already have been issued.
The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 24. Applications can be mailed or hand carried to the Permit Sales Office, building 2168 South 8th Ave. at Fort McCoy. Applications can be downloaded from the Fort McCoy Public Web site www.mccoy.army.mil, requested by email at mcco.dpw.permitsales@conus.army.mil, or picked up at the Permit Sales Office.
