Village Board OKs referendum language

The West Salem Village Board approved the final wording of a referendum that will appear on the November ballot.

The question will read “Under State law, the increase in the levy of the Village of West Salem for the tax imposed for the next fiscal year (2008) is limited to 2 percent, which results in a levy of $988,819. Shall the Village of West Salem be allowed to exceed this limit and increase the tax levy for the next fiscal year (2008) by a total of 12 percent which results in a levy of $1,085,870?”

Additional levy dollars are needed because of a budget request of more than $388,000 from the West Salem Fire Protection District to balance its upcoming 18-month budget. The board’s vote to approve the language on the referendum passed unanimously.
