The West Salem Sharks swim team had their final home meet of the season on July 12. It was attended by Tomah, Sparta, La Crescent and Galesville.
The weather was a little cool, but it didn’t stop the swimmers or the crowd that cheered them on.
In the 8-and-under age group, first place in the medley relay went to the team of Sammy Gensch, Taylor Jones, Aleshia Furlano and Lauren Gregerson. Caleb Weber won the 25-meter front crawl and Anna Swanson placed sixth. Caleb Weber also won the 25-meter butterfly, Aleshia Furlano took second and Sammy Gensch finished third. The 25-meter back crawl placed Aleshia Furlano third and Taylor Jones fourth. Aleshia Furlano took fourth in the 25-meter breast stroke and Lauren Gergerson placed sixth. Mia Jacobson also participated.
For the 9 and 10 year olds, Mia Leque, Kaylee Mulholland, Chelsea Burkhardt and Amber Holcomb made up the winning team for the medley relay, while Abby Friell, Morgan Weber, Carlie Burkhardt and Sami Servais held on for third. The free relay team of Andrew Akey, Robert Glassmaker, Hans Knudtson and Gabe Sweeney placed second, third place went to Ali Servais, Sammy Peterson, Maggie Lattos and Anna Jacobson and fourth place went to the team of Alison Rigotti, Abby Johnson, Sabrina MacRogers and Abby Maliszewski.
Individually, Mia Leque won the 50-meter breaststroke, Morgan Weber placed second, Barret Rogge and Emily Ungerer third, Robert Glassmaker fourth, Gabe Sweeney fifth and Andrew Akey finished sixth. For the 50-meter back crawl, Emily Ungerer took first, Andrew Akey second, Robert Glassmaker third and Maggie Lattos and Gabe Sweeney finished fourth. Mia Leque placed fourth in the 50-meter freestyle while Robert Glassmaker took fifth place. Chelsea Burkhardt placed third in the 50-meter butterfly and Alison Rigotti took fourth. The individual medley event placed Gabe Sweeney third, Morgan Weber fourth and Mallary Premo fifth.
The 11 and 12 year olds had several relay teams that did well. In the medley relay, the girls team of April Haldeman, Becca Knudson, Brianna Miller and Hannah Thorn placed first as did the boys team of Alex MacRogers, Simon Sweeney, Dominick Sweeney and Jack Greenwood. Also placing first in the free relay was the team of Sinon Sweeney, Brianna Miller, Becca Knudson and Hannah Thorn. The 13-and-14-year-old medley relay girls team of Clara Haldeman, Janelle Bettin, Hannah Piper and Caley Springborn placed third while the team of Katelyn Rigotti, Anessa Holey, Stephanie Miller and Georgie Gensch took fifth. In the open class, the boys team of Garrett Carlson, Alex Koenen, Jessalyn McGuire and Scott Horton and the girls team of Christina Locante, Brittany Ungerer, Tiffany Bettin and Kathleen Thorn won both of their events; the medley relay and the free relay.
Individually the 11 to 12 year olds were represented by Jack Greenwood winning the 50-meter back crawl. Simon Sweeney placed second in that event. Simon Sweeney also placed second in the 50-meter breast stroke, while April Haldeman and Alex MacRogers took third. Jack Greenwood led things again in the 50-meter freestyle placing second, Becca Knudson and Simon Sweeney placed third, Alex MacRogers took fourth and Hannah Thorn placed sixth. Hannah Thorn also placed fifth in the individual medley. Becca Knudson won the 50-meter butterfly and Kyla Delany placed third.
The 13 to 14 year olds started things off with Steven Mossholder winning both the 50-meter freestyle as well as the 50-meter breaststroke. Ben Greenwood placed fifth in both of those events while Kathleen Thorn placed sixth in the freestyle and Janelle Bettin took sixth in the breaststroke. In the 50-meter butterfly, Becca Knudson placed first, Stephanie Miller fourth and Georgie Gensch fifth. Kathleen Thorn won the girls individual medley.
The open class had Clara Haldeman in first place for the girls individual medley. Scott Horton won the 50-meter freestyle, second went to Christina Locante, Caley Springborn placed third and Clara Haldeman fourth. Dominick Sweeney placed third in the 50-meter back crawl and fourth in the 50-meter breaststroke.
The Sharks’ next meet will also be the last for the season. It will take place at the Onalaska pool on July 26.
