Annual golf outing to benefit Boys & Girls Club

The second-annual West Salem High School Alumni & Friends Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2 at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Barre Mills.

Monies raised will go into an endowment fund to help sustain the future operations of the Boys & Girls Club of West Salem Area, and this year there will be a $500 scholarship to a 2009 West Salem senior.

The golf outing will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The cost is $70 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, a lunch and door prizes.

The format will be a best-ball, four-person scramble with payouts for first, second, 12th and last place.

Golfers signing up by July 23 will have their name placed in a drawing to win $70; four names will be drawn before the shotgun start.

In addition, Brenengen’s Auto Group of West Salem and Sparta and GMAC are donating a new car for a par three hole-in-one.

For more information, to register or to donate or sponsor a hole, contact Vicki Miller at Vicki@vsm5.com or call 786-0338.

West Salem Post Office offers passports

While passports are currently not required for travel by land and sea to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, travel agents and cruise lines are strongly urging travelers to get them as soon as possible.

The U.S. Department of State says Homeland Security will begin requiring passports as early as June 1, 2009. That is the revised date for a mandatory U.S. passport or one of the new wallet-sized passport cards. The passport books are good for anywhere outside the United States. The passport cards will be good for land and sea travel to Canada and Mexico.

The West Salem Post Office is currently accepting applications for passports Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. but will adjust these times to meet the needs of customers.

To apply for a passport, an individual will need an original or a certified copy of their birth certificate, a driver’s license, two passport photos and a method of payment; a check or money order has to be sent to the U.S. Department of State.

Cost of an adult passport with photo is $115, which includes the cost of the photo that can be taken at the West Salem Post Office. For those under 16, the cost is $100, and additional information is required.

It will take four to six weeks to process the passport application. A passport application can be expedited for an additional fee.

For more information, call the West Salem Post Office at 786-1710.
