The Bangor FFA chapter recently returned from state FFA convention held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison June 9-12 and members had many successes.
Students who attended the convention were Ashley Anderson, Sawyer Kerkman, Jesse Rabuck, Jared Heuer, Jennifer Heuer, Christian Thompson, Jordan Langrehr, Tanner Johnson and Tyler Page and Julie Anderson helped chaperone the trip.
Ashley, Rabuck and Kerkman were on the state choir and performed before each session. Thompson and Jared were the delegates and voted on state proposals and the next state officer. Jennifer and Langrehr received their state FFA degrees. Johnson and Page were courtesy corps members and helped check for official dress at the career show.
As part of the convention, the members were able to go on some educational tours. Some of the Bangor FFA members attended the tour of the Nevin Fish Hatchery, the oldest in the state of Wisconsin, and Crave Brothers Dairy in Watertown, home of an on-farm cheese plant and methane digester. Other activities at convention included motivational guest speakers, award sessions, workshops and a career show with 10 to 15 college and technical colleges for the students to talk to.
In addition to the workshops and sessions, there are many state contests where members throughout the state were competing for a spot at nationals. Page competed in the seventh- through ninth-grade age group in the Engineering Division of the state’s Agriscience Fair. The Agriscience Fair consists of five different areas students can do research in, such as the engineering area, botany, zoology, food science and environmental science. The student designs an experiment to test a theory, does research on the theory, develops a log book on the experiment, creates a display board and writes an official research paper discussing the experiment.
Page’s project included the construction of a Van De Graff generator and supercharging a magnet to pick up more nails than a regular magnet. Many hours spent on the project paid off for Page because he won the state competition in the individual engineering category and will compete at the national convention in October.
Other accomplishments for the chapter included receiving the FFA PRIDE award for increase in membership and a blue ribbon on the scrapbook created by Jennifer.
“It was a great convention and the members that attended should be proud of their accomplishments,” said Bangor FFA advisor Bob Ickler.
