LETTER: Bike sale: bad calls or false advertising?

The front page of the June 19 edition of The Coulee News contained a nice feature article: “West Salem Police Department to peddle bikes.”

The second paragraph of the article noted that “The bike sale will be held on June 21 from 8 a.m. to noon,” and the third paragraph notes Police Chief Charles Ashbeck as saying: “The sale hopes to give people the opportunity to purchase a bicycle inexpensively while freeing up storage.”

But the sale as promoted did not take place and did not give people the opportunity promised.

Unfortunately, folks arrived at the sale at 8 a.m. or shortly before to find a lot of the bikes were gone. When asked why, prospective buyers learned that someone arrived around 7 a.m. with a trailer, bought many of the bikes and departed — leaving the community out of luck.

Yes, the goal was to sell the bikes, free up storage space and make a few dollars for police department programs. Sure, the goal was reached — with no consideration for the community who believed the article in The Coulee News. A whole lot of folks were very disappointed to find they’d spent time and gas dollars only to be told “the bikes were gone.” And there are probably a number of folks who couldn’t afford a new bike who were excited about an opportunity to purchase one they could afford only to find they’ll still have no bike.

Adding further to the negative, the person who bought them will likely refurbish, resell and make a tidy profit. Ugh!

When it comes time for another bike sale, I hope the police will think twice before making such decisions.

" I commend them for what they tried.. and frankly who cares that the bikes were gone. that was the point of the whole thing. If you need a bike that bad do the same thing my neighbors do and steal them. "

" who says you need an auctioneer? this isnt barrett-jackson. Pretty sure it could be done without the help of a stuttering hillbilly.. Obviously smart people like you run things around there so thats why nothing gets done right.. der der der "

" For $5 bikes, you want an auction? Who pays for the auctioneer then? That being the case, why bother? "

" why wasnt it a bike auction instead of a bike sale? Seems that would have been fair.. Im sure they could find something to do with the money they made.. "

" and find out what the real story is. In reading the bike sale story, I think it pretty much states what happened that morning. Why did people show up at 7:15 when the sale didn't start until 8:00? People standing around, holding on to bikes for 45 minues: Think about that--would creating a human police barrier around the bikes have been a better solution? Just like rummage sales..the sign says no early callers, and still people show up early, trying to get a deal. If everyone is holding on to a bike and the clock strikes 8:00 a.m., would the on time people have gotten a bike? No. "

" I showed up at 7:45 and there were no bikes of any decent status left. I saw vans with MN plates leaving with 3 biked inside. When I asked what the deal was, the chief said that there were too many people and that they didn't want to deal with a mob that they couldn't control--these are our police??? This should have been limited to village residents only. Our police robbed our own villagers. "

Did you even talk to the chief wrote on Jul 2, 2008 8:10 PM:

" you should get your facts straight before you write letters like this. "
