A Bangor home may finally be razed after repairs and clean-up have failed to be completed.

An inspection report by Bangor village engineer Randy Sullivan has concluded that there has been minimal progress on a property at 1714 Commercial St. The property, which is adjacent to the VFW and owned by Robert Challet, has been the subject of legal proceedings between the village board and the county since last October.

At that time, the village board voted 6-1 to begin the official condemnation process. The 6-1 vote came despite the fact that Challet had retained an attorney who asked the board to reconsider condemnation because progress had been made.

Subsequently, the case went to La Crosse County Circuit Court, where a June 30 deadline was set to assess whether an adequate clean-up had been made. Sullivan recently made another inspection of the property and then passed his finding on to the lead attorney for the village, Rick Niemeier, who forwarded the report on to court authorities.

“Basically, there hasn’t been a lot of progress on it. There is still dilapidation as well as some safety issues,” Sullivan said.

The case is now in the hands of the circuit court. “The ruling will be made by Judge (Dale) Pasell,” said Dan Arndt of Arndt, Buswell and Thorn, the Sparta law firm that represents the village.

“(Pasell) now has the report saying that the situation has not improved, so he could rule that the property be razed. Of course any decision is at his discretion. He could extend the deadline or come up with some other creative solution, but I don’t think that’s likely at this point,” Arndt said.

As to how soon a resolution can be reached, Arndt said that depends on the actions of Challet and his attorney.

“If they dispute the findings of the building inspector then a hearing date would be set and we would have to go from there,” he said.

Challet was unable to be reached for comment for this story.

" Instead of worrying about this house, shouldn't they be more worried about the old Sphren Mill that is right next door? "

" If the home is a pit like some of those around here, they need to come down... If you cant afford the costs of owning a home, then rent. that is if anyone will even rent to you. "

" this could happen to anyone's home if there are certain people who want it for particular ventures, delapidated or not.public meetings are open to the public and we as the public need to take a stand against actions such as this because the next raze and condemn could be to one of us! good luck russ! "

" If the building inspector lives in Sparta you might not get any sympathy. You should see some of the houses in Sparta. One in particular is kitty corner from the nursing home and it looks like a crack house.

Sparta is littered with these dumps! I took my grandkids to the tastee treat and the smell of pot was so strong I had to get them out of there. The "gang" of kids in the alley (by a dumpy house) were having a gay old time in broad day light. Sparta needs to clean up its act. "

" not sure what guy you are referring to "relol" I was writing about the junk hole over on north youlon in West Salem.. I couldnt care less about bangor.. and like someone else said, the house in that pic is way nicer than some of the homes in West Salem. "

" Everyone lives differently. Why don't you just leave the man alone. No neighbors complain because he has no neighbors! Really, what is he doing to hurt you? If you don't like it, don't look. With everything going on in the world I am sure glad this is on the top of the list in Bangor! "

" is most of the "decent" neighbors have sold their homes around that "dumplex" on N. Youlon! The other neighbors seem to coexist in the mess at this place, have you ever drove by on any given weekend night to see that group? Keep in mind most of South Youlon is owned by a slum lord too! Yeah, the attorney in town, he really needs to be told to do some "clean-up" of his properties including replacing the people who live in them and live in that manner! "

" Yeah you arent kidding there. that place needed to come down years ago. Looks like they tried to fix it up by doing two sides of it in new siding that is by now falling off because the wood underneath is rotted ... Wish some one would explain to us why homes like this still stand in West Salem. I was told our building inspector lives in Sparta. Ill bet if he lived here next to this pile he would look differently at properties like this. I feel sorry for their neighbors.. "

" now maybe west salem will do the same to a certain home on the corner of north youlon and franklin street.. The home you have pictured here looks MUCH better than the home I refer to. Same kind of yard though. "
