Sharks host first season home meet

The West Salem Sharks swim team hosted their first meet of the season on Thursday, June 26. It was attended by Sparta, Onalaska, Holmen, Trempealeau and Coulee Region Rapids.

The Sharks did a respectable job in the face of such stiff competition.

In the 8-and-under age group, Aleshia Furlano placed third in the 25-meter butterfly, with Caleb Webber taking fourth and Angela Jones fifth. Taylor Jones finished fifth in the 25-meter back crawl and Furlano placed fourth in the 25-meter breaststroke. The medley relay team of Mya Jacobson, Aleshia Furlano, Maddie Kinnear and Angela Jones placed fourth.

The 9-and-10-year-old individual results are as follows: Mia Leque placed second and Robert Glassmaker took sixth in the 50-meter breaststroke; Chelsea Burkhardt and Gabe Sweeney both placed fourth in the 50-meter butterfly and sixth place went to Abby Maliszewski; fourth place in the 50-meter back crawl went to Lydia Schultz, and Robert Glassmaker and Eric Sells finished fifth; the medley relay team of Mia Leque, Abby Maloszewski and Carlie Burkhardt finished third and the team of Alison Rigotti, Kaylee Mulholland, Nora Meyer and Morgan Weber took fifth; in the free relay event, the team of Anna Jacobson, Sammy Peterson, Maggie Lattos and Abby Johnson placed fifth and the team of Ali Servais, Abby Friell, Hannah Pierce and Amber Holcomb took sixth.

The 11-and-up age group had Catey Greenwood winning the individual medley and the 50-meter back crawl and placing second in the 50-meter freestyle. Ploy Theinvator and Scott Horton won the 50-meter freestyle with second going to Jack Greenwood; Rachel Auna, Simon Sweeney and Christina Locante placed third, Tiffany Bettin and Ben Greenwood finished fourth and Janelle Bettin took fifth in that event.

Tiffany Bettin and Zach Rigotti won the 50-meter breaststroke while Simon Sweeney and Ben Greenwood placed second, Dominick Sweeney placed third, Steven Mossholder took fourth and April Haldeman and Janelle Bettin had sixth. Rachel Auna took third and Jack Greenwood fourth in the 50-meter back crawl. Clara Haldeman placed fifth in the individual medley as well as second in the 50-meter butterfly. Becca Knutson placed third in the butterfly.

The 11- and 12-year-old girls free relay team of Anessa Holey, Kayla Bushman, Briana Miller and April Haldeman placed sixth and the medley relay team of Becca Knutson, Kayla Bushman, April Haldeman and Stephanie Miller took fourth.

The 13- and 14-year-old girls medley relay team of Rachel Auna, Clara Haldeman, Janelle Bettin and Georgie Gensch won their event as well as finishing second in the free relay.

The 15-and-up boys free relay team of Scott Horton, Alex Koenen, Garrett Carlson and Zach Rigotti also won their race. And the 15-and-up girls team of Ploy Theinvator, Tiffany Bettin, Catey Greenwood and Christina Locante won both the free relay and the medley relay.

The Sharks’ next home meet is July 12.
