The second week of May started rich with sounds for the members of jazz band and wind ensemble at West Salem High School.

On Monday, May 5, the large Heider Center auditorium hosted The Winona State Jazz Ensemble.

Director Richard MacDonald and the band performed a wide array of jazz music, including New Orleans-type swing as well as current funk chart-toppers made popular by the Brecker Brothers.

According to David Kies, band director at WSHS, the students highly enjoyed the performance and did their high school credit by being once again great audience members.

“The Winona State Jazz Ensemble was very impressive,” said senior Sarah Niebur. “The band members really benefited from hearing it and the music selection was excellent.”

Unfortunately, due to the time limits of The Winona State Jazz Ensemble, West Salem’s fifth-hour band members didn’t get the chance to attend the performance.

“I really would have liked to have had all of the band students at the performance,” said Kies. “It was a great experience for the group, though. I’m glad they got to hear a band of this caliber.”
