According to what I have read recently, the 2008 Farm Bill was a bad bill and President Bush was correct in vetoing it. However, Congress has overridden that veto and so now the bill is the law of the land. Ugh!
I understand that the bill had overwhelming support from both political parties — that’s Democrats and Republicans in case you don’t know their names.
Why did Congress pass a bad bill (again) that includeds hundreds of millions and millions and millions of dollars of “earmarks,” or “pork barrel” legislation to us old timers? Because they don’t care what you think.
They know they can get away with it because it is not a priority with you and they will still get your vote. They know that most of you will never know how they voted and even if you do, you won’t do anything about it. They know that they promised to end “earmarks,” but then they promise a lot of things and never follow up especially in election years.
They know they can rationalize by saying, “well there were some good things about the bill and we just have to take the bad with the good, but mostly they like “pork” because it makes them look good and helps keep them in office, and because they just don’t give a damn.
And they also know that you will continue to pay your taxes and thus all will get paid for, including their bloated salaries and perks.
