Melrose-Mindoro High School held its annual Awards Night on Monday, May 5. Many different awards and scholarships were presented.
The Wallace Jones Scholarship sponsored by Mathy Construction was awarded to Nathan Tollefson.
Lunda Vocational-Technical Scholarships were presented to Dillion Storandt, Stephanie Stello, Nick Jolivette, Janelle Hanson, Amanda Hagen, Thomas Dobbs, Katrina Van Riper and Courtney Volden.
The First National Bank of Mindoro gave Stello a savings bond recognizing her as the outstanding business student.
Whitney Larson received the Courtney Finch Memorial Scholarship.
The William E. Storandt Memorial Scholarship was presented to Kally Bockenhauer, and Jessica Scholze received the Federation Cooperative Scholarship.
The Elaine Waldera Memorial Scholarship was presented to Nathan Tollefson, and he also received the Niki Stetzer Academic Decathlon Scholarship.
Maddie McRae received the Estella Bryhn Scholarship.
The Mindoro Lions Club presented scholarships to Kally Bockenhauer and McRae, while the North Bend Lions Club presented a scholarship to Nathan Tollefson.
Elizabeth Olson was the recipient of the Keith Hardie Memorial Scholarship.
In the area of natural resources or agriculture, Bockenhauer received awards from some local groups. She received scholarships from the Cataract Sportsmen’s Club Wings Over Wisconsin and Quad County Wild Turkeys Limited. She also received state or national scholarships from Badgerland Farm Credit Services and the National FFA-GMAC.
In addition, Stello and Bockenhauer received scholarships from local agricultural organizations. They were both recognized by the Melrose-Mindoro FFA Alumni Association. Bockenhauer also received scholarships in memory of Armin Kramer, Frank Dobbs and Stanley Peterson. Stello received scholarships in memory of Travis Olson and Joe Koch; she also received the Konze/Jessie Memorial Scholarship.
A large number of groups and organizations were represented. The Friends of Melrose presented Dave Gilbertson/Denise Storandt Memorial Scholarships to Courtney Volden and McRae. They also recognized Marisa Johnson for her participation in the Wisconsin Leadership Seminar. The Bank River Country Bank presented a scholarship to Gabriel Schmidt. Schmidt also received the Ed Woods Scholarship. Jessica Scholze received the Co-op Credit Union Scholarship.
In addition, Jenna Johnson and Stello won scholarships from the Coulee Region Riders Club. Wesley Watring was recognized for receiving the La Crosse Tribune Extra Effort Award.
Another group presenting was the Barnyard Trailriders. They presented a scholarship to Bockenhauer. For the first time, Norgaard Agency/Grinnell Mutual Insurance awarded a scholarship at Melrose-Mindoro; it went to Stello.
There were many other awards as well. In music, the Rudy Meyer Scholarship was received by Rachel Hanson. Also in music, the Larry Busching Memorial Scholarship was received by Elizabeth Olson.
In finance, Milt and Lydia Lunda Finance and Investment Scholarships were presented to Stello and Jayd Adamson. The Melrose-Mindoro Staff Scholarships were presented to Larson, Nathan Tollefson and McRae. McRae also received a Charles Sechler Fund Scholarship as did Katelin Ebner. In addition, Vinger Foundation Scholarships were awarded to Johnson and Katelin Ebner.
The legion posts and their auxiliaries recognized a variety of students. The Mindoro American Legion commended Abby Rand for her participation in the American Legion Oratorical Contest. They also recognized Dan Faas as their representative to Badger Boys State, and they granted a scholarship to Janelle Hanson. The Melrose American Legion presented the Citizenship Medallion to Bockenhauer. The Melrose American Legion also presented a scholarship to Schmidt, and they recognized Lars Grinde as their Badger Boys State selection. The Melrose American Legion Auxiliary recognized Jordan Blaken as their Badger Girls State representative, and the Mindoro Legion Auxiliary recognized Cassie Roberts as the Badger Girls State representative from their post. In addition, the Mindoro American Legion Auxiliary presented a scholarship to Bockenhauer.
Numerous awards were presented to students for their achievement in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities. Larson was recognized as the school’s selection for the Wisconsin All-State Scholar/Robert C. Byrd Award. Receiving medallions as the honor students for the class of 2008 were Larson and Bockenhauer.
At the conclusion of the program Larson received a certificate from the state of Wisconsin for being Melrose-Mindoro’s Academic Excellence Award winner.
