The West Salem High School class of 2008 had its final appearance when it hosted the Senior Sing Out on Friday, May 23rd. They bade farewell to the staff, students and guests in the informal precursor to Sunday’s graduation.

As part of the Sing Out tradition, the seniors issued challenges in their various clubs and athletics to the junior class, such as have more inside jokes between the girls basketball team or wining conference, regionals and sectionals for the girls cross country team. For next year, the juniors will try to meet or exceed the challenges that were put before them.

The senior choir members sang, followed by a duet by Sarah Beier and Molly Jensen. A few of the events were a departure from tradition, including “shaving” Principal Troy Gunderson’s legendary bald head.

Another crowd-pleaser was senior Ross Bradley, who sang and played guitar to his own original version of “The Times of Your Life.”

Laughter and tears gave way as the lights dimmed and the ceremony concluded with the highly anticipated senior slideshow featuring the seniors’ baby photos morphing into their senior pictures and various candid moments from their years as students of the district.

As they sang their final farewell, the seniors shared Bradley’s sentiments in the closing lines of his song: “Good luck to the class of 2009.”
