Developers submitting proposals for old brewery

The Bangor Village Board learned that the exploration of a possible tax increment financing district for the old Sprehn Mill/Hussa Brewery site is going forward, with village engineer Chuck Sulik reviewing proposals by potential developers.

“The developers should be through explaining their proposals to Sulik by the end of next week and then he will make his recommendations on whether a TIF is feasible,” said Village President Robin Gjertsen.

Board members also learned that Braun Intertec, the firm charged with cleaning up contamination at the site, had sent the final draft of their report to the DNR on May 9. The village will most likely hear a verdict from the DNR in about four weeks. Getting the DNR to sign off that the site is clean is another hurdle the village will have to overcome to establish a TIF district.

The planning commission discuss the matter sometime before the June Village Board meeting. “I’ve heard that one of the developers is in negotiation with the current owner (Robert Lunke) for title to the property,” Gjertsen said. “If that comes off, the deal can go ahead. It (demolition of the site) is not a sure thing by any means, but it’s closer than it’s ever been.”

In other action, the board revoked a conditional-use permit held by Chris Mason. Mason had been given until May 13 to remove several vehicles from his property that were not roadworthy.

Trustee Eric Vaughn and Police Chief Scott Alo had gone to look at the property earlier in the day. According to Vaughn, there were two wrecked vehicles still present.

Mason said that he had people coming to help him in the next few days and that the site would be completely cleaned up by Monday, May 19. “Essentially, I’m asking for an extension of one week,” Mason said.

That drew an angry response from neighbor Minnie Bolcerek. “I’ve had to look at that dump all winter — I’m tired of it,” she said.

“Myself, I feel that we’ve given him enough time,” said Trustee Dan Hesse. “The vehicles are not licensed and they are not roadworthy.”

By law, Mason will have 10 days to clean up the site. If not in compliance by then, he would be subject to fines.

The board also heard from Amy Doubek, the village’s new recreation director. After introducing herself, she gave the trustees a rundown of the summer programs being offered. She noted that some of the youth teams still need coaches and that it would also be advisable to have a few more umpires trained to help out.

Doubek had high praise for outgoing recreation director Kari Johnson. “She has been so helpful. I’m wondering if there is any way we could do something to thank her?” she asked.

After discussion, the board voted to send Johnson a gift card for dinner at the Village Inn.

The board approved purchase of two park benches for the area around the children’s playground at Village Park after hearing from constituents that there was no place for parents to sit while watching their children play.

The board also approved a request to close the alley between Nubs and Bangor Lanes on June 6 for a girls basketball fundraiser. The time of the closure will be from 2:30 p.m until 7:00 p.m.

A temporary liquor license was granted to the American Legion for two dates — June 28 and July 4.

Finally, the board learned that some village employees had asked about the possibility of direct deposit of their paychecks. The issue will be explored further at the June meeting.

" Go Lady Cardinals! Thank- you to the parents to take the time to set up a successful fundraiser to help with summer league costs. The rest of you with the ridiculous comments of holding it in a bar you need to "Get a Life". "

" LOL common sense!?!?! Is that why you are holding it in an alley? "

TO To Proud Parent wrote on May 31, 2008 9:48 AM:

" They have to close the alley from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. probably so they can set up picnic tables for people to eat, etc. Does the article say that is when they will be serving? Common sense! "

To proud parent wrote on May 29, 2008 2:52 PM:

" Read the article, it states the time is 2:30 to 7:30. That is why people are questioning the time. "

If you are that concerned wrote on May 29, 2008 12:32 PM:

" If you are that worried about it take your kids to AA! Did your child become a raging alcoholic because of this? Pull your head out or your rear or take your kid to another school! "

" First off-it is not held in the street because there are no outlets there to plug in roasters. Secondly, the girls that were there were there to help out by serving food and then they left. Lastly, I don't understand why on a Friday night serving food from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. is such a strange time. There is also set up involved. Maybe you can come up with better ideas to raise money, other than to all work together to earn enough in one night to have all the teams involved in the summer program and tournaments. Have at it! "

" I believe when we had the meeting there was no opposition to the place or time..if you really had an issue it should have been brought up then... Re: the time I'm not sure why you think it's a strange time.. "

" This is a fundraiser put on by the parents of the girls b-ball players...I did participate in this fundraiser last year and it was a huge success--fun was had by all. Having it @ Nub's was really not a big deal. The goal is to raise $ to offset the cost of the summer leagues & tournaments. This is a great event for a great cause..let's not sweat the small stuff and have a great time.. "

re not a high school event wrote on May 28, 2008 1:05 PM:

" It is still held in an alley! Why not ask for permission to block off the street in front of the bowling alley? Also please give me some incite on why they are holding it at such a strange time? "

Not a High School Event wrote on May 27, 2008 11:53 AM:

" This is not a high school event. This is a fundraiser held by the parents to raise funds for tournaments and summer leagues. It helps relive some of the burden on parents to have to come up with the money. It is held in an alley because it is convenient for people to walk over and bowl after they are done eating. It also helps the sale of walk-up tickets. "

I agree w I agree wrote on May 27, 2008 9:31 AM:

" This isn't Bangor's only bar-located fundraiser. What about the Booster Club annual night at the log cabin - alcohol, pull tabs...etc. In the name of sports though, so it's ok. "

I agree wrote on May 25, 2008 10:19 AM:

" I agree--only in Bangor would you have a high school fundraiser at a bar. Even though it's outside, it still should not be held at a bar. "

" Only in Bangor, would you close off an alley and hold a fundraiser. Why not ust the park shelter? "
