Despite a 1-0 double overtime loss to Tomah on May 8 and a 3-0 loss to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption the following afternoon, West Salem’s girls soccer coach Marc Anderson had praise for his young team.
“Against Tomah we played very well and our defense was great — the shot that we lost on was just a great shot by their player (Jorden James),” Anderson said.
Although it was a heartbreaking loss, Anderson said he was heartened by the play of his defense — sophomore Kristin Muenzenberger, in particular.
“All the defense played well, but Kristin played the best game of her career,” Anderson said. In addition, junior goalie Paige Roth-Smith had seven saves in the 92-minute contest.
The next day, the Panthers took a two-hour bus ride to Wisconsin Rapids for their annual nonconference game against undefeated Wisconsin Rapids Assumption. Although they lost that contest, 3-0, Anderson was not discouraged.
“They have a very strong team that really limited our scoring opportunities. Still, our defense played pretty solid again,” Anderson said.
The Panthers have a busy week ahead of them with a May 12 game against Aquinas, a May 13 game against La Crosse Central and a May 15 home game against Holmen. The Holmen game will be Parents Appreciation Night.
