The Bangor High School softball team went 1-3 in games last week and wrapped up its regular season this week before beginning tournament play May 15.

The Cardinals begin the week with a solid 7-1 win at Cashton on Monday, May 5. The contest was a scoreless tie until the top of the fifth when Bangor finally broke the ice with a single run. They added one more in the sixth, but Cashton responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the same frame to make it 2-1.

The Cardinals broke the game open in the top of the seventh with a five-run outburst. Leading hitters for the game were Jessica Kapanke who went 2-for-4 with a double and Sam Piske who also went 2-for-4. Kapanke had two RBI and Piske had three.

Two nights later, Bangor played two games against New Lisbon at home. In the first game the Cardinals got blown out 13-0. They managed only two hits while making five errors.

“The game came down to the fact that New Lisbon hit the ball and we did not, plus we had five costly errors,” said coach Aimee Zucco.

The second game started out as if it might go the same way as New Lisbon scored a half-dozen runs in their first at-bat and three more in the second inning. Bangor rallied after that, scoring six runs in all, not quite enough to catch up as the final score was 11-6.

“It just wasn’t our night,” Zucco said.

The next night the Cardinals matched up against Brookwood in a pitchers’ duel. Siera Holzhausen had five strikeouts and three walks, while Brookwood’s pitcher struck out nine with no walks.

“This was a well-played game by both sides. It was our strongest defensive effort of the year. Siera threw a great game, hitting all the spots she needed to,” Zucco said.

Brookwood got its first run in the fourth inning and added one more in the top of the seventh to make it 2-1. Alicia Duerwachter led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. After she was sacrificed to second by Tara Arndt, Piske tripled to drive her in. A strikeout and an infield single by Brook White left runners at the corners, but after a long battle at the plate, Alexis Campbell was thrown out by the second baseman to end the game.

The Cardinal’s regular season ended Monday with a game against Royall at home. In round 1 of the playoffs, Bangor will play the same Royall team on the same field today (May 15). The Cardinals are seeded #2 in their regional.
