Four men accused in an April 13 string of mailbox bombs in the Melrose area appeared Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court.

The four — Mathias Marco, 19, of Melrose, Daniel Sye, 19, of Mindoro, Anthony Dobbs, 19, of Melrose, and Benjamin Pfaff, 18, of Mindoro — are scheduled to have a pretrial conference with the Jackson County District Attorney’s office at 1:30 p.m. May 20.

Signature bonds for each of the men were continued Monday by Judge Gerald Laabs. The only change in the bond conditions — which includes no contact with the victims or their properties, no contact with explosive materials and no contact with the co-defendants — was with Dobbs and Pfaff, who work at the same location. All but Pfaff appeared in person. Pfaff was represented by attorney John Brinckman of La Crosse. All were represented by counsel.

Marco and Sye each face felony possession of improvised explosives and three misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property, all as party to the crime. Dobbs and Pfaff each face three counts of party to the crime of criminal damage to property.

All four defendants entered pleas of not guilty to the misdemeanor charges.

Pfaff told authorities Marco constructed and lit the homemade bombs inside three mailboxes on Red School Road and Highway 54 in the town of Melrose, according to the criminal complaint. All exploded, but no one was injured.

Sye drove the vehicle in the incidents, while Pfaff and Dobbs were passengers, the complaint stated.

Pfaff said Marco and Sye brought the explosive devices to Dobbs’ residence, according to the complaint.
